When God Feels Distant
There are moments in the Christian life when God feels distant... Not absent—but distant.
Psalm 13:1-2
How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily?
Prayers seem to rise but not return. Scripture feels quiet. The sense of God’s nearness that once brought comfort now feels faint.
David understood that feeling.
“How long…?” he asks repeatedly.
This is not the language of rebellion. It is the language of honest faith.
Faith does not ignore struggle. It brings it to God.
David did not walk away from the Lord in his confusion—he spoke to Him.
That is the difference.
Many people interpret spiritual dryness as evidence that something is wrong with their faith. But Scripture shows us that even strong believers experience seasons where God feels hidden.
The key is not avoiding those seasons.
It is responding to them correctly.
David moves from questioning to trusting.
In verse 5, he says, “But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.”
The situation had not changed yet. The feeling had not immediately lifted.
But David chose to anchor himself in what he knew to be true.
God’s mercy had not changed.
God’s character had not shifted.
God’s promises had not failed.
When God feels distant, truth must become louder than emotion.
Feelings fluctuate.
Truth remains.
Faith is not the absence of questions. It is the decision to trust God even when answers are delayed.
If you are in a season where God feels far, do not withdraw.
Speak to Him.
Return to His Word.
Remind your heart of what you know to be true.
Though God seems quiet, He is still present.
