What to Do When You Feel Spiritually Numb

Feeling spiritually numb or disconnected? Psalm 42 can help you understand spiritual dryness and how to rekindle your desire for God.

Psalm 42:1-2
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God…

Spiritual numbness can be confusing.

You still believe.
You still show up.
But something feels… distant.

The passion you once had feels weaker. The excitement in Scripture feels quieter. Prayer feels more routine than alive.

Psalm 42 describes a different kind of struggle—not rebellion, but dryness.

My soul thirsteth…”

Thirst is not a sign of failure.

It is a sign of need.

And more importantly—it is a sign of life.

Dead things do not thirst.

The psalmist recognized something many believers overlook: longing for God is itself a work of God.

The very desire to seek Him is evidence that He is drawing you.

But the psalmist does something intentional.

In verse 5 he says, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?… hope thou in God.”

He speaks to his own soul.

Spiritual numbness cannot always be solved by emotion—it must be addressed with truth.

You remind yourself:

God is still good.
God is still present.
God is still worthy.

Sometimes the way out of dryness is not waiting to feel differently—it is continuing faithfully.

Return to Scripture.
Return to prayer.
Stay consistent.

The same God your should soul long for is the One who can satisfy it.
