A Heart That Gives Thanks
Gratitude is not merely a pleasant attitude. According to Scripture, it is a command.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
We would not consider every situation to be good. Scripture never asks us to pretend hardship is enjoyable. But it does call us to recognize that God remains good even when circumstances are difficult.
Thanksgiving shifts our perspective.
Instead of focusing only on what is missing, gratitude reminds us of what God has already provided:
Life.
Salvation.
Grace.
Forgiveness.
Daily provision.
The human heart easily drifts toward complaint. We notice inconvenience quickly. We remember disappointments easily. Gratitude, however, requires intentional reflection.
Psalm 103 begins with the words, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”
Gratitude remembers.
It remembers answered prayers.
It remembers past deliverance.
It remembers God’s faithfulness through seasons we thought we would not survive.
And when we remember, thanksgiving naturally follows.
Gratitude also guards the heart from bitterness. Complaining magnifies problems, but thanksgiving magnifies God.
When our focus returns to Him, hope grows stronger.
Even in difficult seasons there are reasons to give thanks.
The presence of God.
The promise of eternity.
The assurance that nothing can separate us from His love.
A thankful heart does not ignore pain. It simply refuses to let pain become the whole story.
Give thanks today.
Not because life is perfect, but because God is faithful.
