The King Who Ascended
For forty days after the resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples many times. Acts 1:3 tells us He showed Himself alive “by many infallible proofs.” These encounters confirmed that the resurrection was not imagination or legend — it was undeniable reality.
Acts 1:9-11
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus… shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Then Jesus led His disciples to the Mount of Olives.
There He gave final instructions and reminded them that the mission of the gospel would continue through them.
And then something extraordinary happened.
As they watched, Jesus was lifted up into heaven.
The disciples stood staring into the sky until two angels delivered an important message:
“This same Jesus… shall so come in like manner.”
The resurrection proved that Jesus conquered death.
The ascension revealed that He does reign.
Christ did not disappear into obscurity. He returned to the Father’s presence as the victorious King.
Hebrews 7:25 says that He “ever liveth to make intercession” for His people.
The risen Christ now serves as our High Priest, constantly representing us before the Father.
But the angels’ message also pointed forward.
The same Jesus who ascended will return.
The resurrection therefore looks both backward and forward.
Backward to the empty tomb.
Forward to the coming King.
For the disciples, the ascension was not the end of the story — it was the beginning of their mission.
They returned to Jerusalem with courage and purpose.
The resurrection had changed everything.
And the same risen Savior still calls His followers to carry His message into the world.
